NASCAR President Steve Phelps has mentioned on multiple occasions in 2024 his desire for drivers to lean into natural rivalries. Earlier this year at Circuit of the Americas, I asked multiple drivers, including Brad Keselowski — what two drivers in today’s Cup Series field would make up the top rivalry and draw attention to the sport?

“Chase Elliott and Bubba Wallace,” Keselowski said. “That’s easy. They got the two biggest fanbases. If you get those two mad at each other, that’d be great.”

Brad Keselowski and Kyle Busch Have a Rivalry That Dates Back Years

Brad Keselowski knows a little something about rivalries. He has had one of the longest in the sport with Kyle Busch. Back in 2010, the young Keselowski let it be known what he thought of his counterpart during driver intros at Bristol.

“Brad Keselowski, driver of the Penske Racing Dodge,” he paused. “Kyle Busch is an ass.”

There was more where that came from, including back in 2017 on Twitter when the former JGR driver didn’t sugarcoat what he thought of Keselowski’s comments on “NASCAR letting a manufacturer get this far ahead since the 1970s.” Busch replied: “STFU.”

Brad Keselowski Adds Latest Chapter With Kyle Busch

During the rain delay at Kansas before the May 5 race, Brad Keselowski and his RFK Racing teammate Chris Buescher hung out in the team hauler playing a friendly game of Rock, Paper, Scissors, which was shared on the team’s X account. The RFK co-owner also shared his thoughts on his own account, including a video revealing his rivalry with Busch is still alive and well.

“I was just telling these guys that I can eat these now since they stopped sponsoring Kyle Busch,” he admitted, holding a bag of M&Ms in his hand.

Both drivers have been running better as of late. That’s when rivalries matter the most. In a 2024 season that’s been full of action and historic finishes in the first dozen races, it wouldn’t be bad to bring back an old rivalry from the vault to add a little more spice to season.

Kyle Busch will go down as one of the greatest drivers in NASCAR history with his 63 (and counting) wins in the Cup Series, and a pair of championships. Before Rowdy ever became a thing, his older brother Kurt was making his way, and making waves in NASCAR circles. The younger Busch has mentioned on multiple occasions how he was negatively received from the jump due to his older brother’s less-than-stellar reputation.

This week on the Kenny Wallace Conversation on YouTube, the Richard Childress Racing driver sat down with the former driver and Fox announcer and talked about various things, including Busch’s early beginnings. The show host was caught off guard when the 38-year-old provided a detailed history of his path into racing, and specifically how his older brother landed a ride out of tragedy.

“I actually knew Dick Trickle a little bit beforehand, obviously just following NASCAR and seeing him race in the Busch Series and the Cup Series and everything else,” Busch said. “His brother, Chuck, lived in Las Vegas and his nephew, Chris Trickle, was racing out in the Southwest Tour and racing late models and stuff like that on the West Coast scene and was probably one of the next West Coast guys to make it big to go into NASCAR.

“But unfortunately he was shot in a drive-by shooting and never raced again. But that moment was actually the turning point for the Busch family and our stature in Vegas for Kurt to get into that Southwest Tour car that Chris was driving to take it over to run that 70 Star Nursery car and run it to multiple wins and a championship. And then that was the moment where Kurt got the call from Roush to go run in the Truck Series. So like there’s a whole connection there with respect and everything that we’ve had through that family and what they’ve meant to us and us being able to get to the big leagues.”

Kyle Busch Produced One of Greatest Careers Following in Brother’s Footsteps

After Kurt Busch got the call, Kyle received a call of his own and debuted in 2001 with Roush in the Truck Series at IRP. The 16-year-0ld was impressive and finished ninth.

Since that first race, Busch has run in more than 1,000 combined races between all three series, and has recorded a staggering 230 wins, including the all-time series leader for both the Xfinity (102) and Trucks (65), respectively. In addition to his pair of Cup titles, he also earned the 2009 Xfinity championship, and has won the sport’s biggest races — Coca-Cola 600, Brickyard 400 (twice), Southern 500 — the Daytona 500, the lone exception.

While Busch embraced the black hat role that he unwillingly had bestowed on him from those early days, since his switch to RCR, he’s been much better received. He no longer hears boos but cheers at driver introductions.

Cheers he has earned in a career that will be forever remembered one day in the future at the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Incredibly, a career born out of tragedy.

Kyle Busch isn’t one to sugarcoat his thoughts. He didn’t this week during an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show. The Richard Childress Racing driver tackled a variety of subjects, including drivers fighting, what it takes to get into F1 and why it’s not in his future, and the possibility of racing IndyCar and the Indianapolis 500. It was during that last topic when the two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion made a surprising revelation about the race and how another Kyle got the ride over him.

“It’s the Indy 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte on the same day. They’re both in May. And my brother did do it,” Busch acknowledged. “He ran I think seventh in the Indy 500 and then he was running fourth or fifth when his engine expired during the Coke 600, so he wasn’t able to finish that one. He had a respectable showing in the Indy 500 never driving an IndyCar before, so he did a really good job with that.

“This year it’s going to be tiny Kyle. So Kyle Larson is going to do it and he kind of actually snuck in maybe, a little bit, on getting that ride from me. That’s who I was talking to about doing the deal, but he got there quicker.”

Kyle Busch Denied by Joe Gibbs in Past

Kyle Busch admitting Kyle Larson took his ride is just the last painful chapter on getting denied to compete in the prestigious race and, unfortunately, it’s a familiar one.

Busch originally planned to follow in his brother’s footsteps and race the Indianapolis 500 back in 2017 and everything was in place for it to happen. However, it all fell apart when Joe Gibbs denied his driver. Busch talked about that situation and his thoughts about running the Greatest Spectacle in Racing at Texas in May 2022.

“It’s certainly on my radar,” Busch said. “The year that I had it sold and committed and sponsorship was there and everything like that, I got told no. I haven’t necessarily tried to sell sponsorship since. There was an easy verbal yes commitment, and things have changed obviously. Don’t have that these days. Overall, excited to be able to watch and cheering for our old pal Jimmie Johnson to go out there and run well and be good.”

Those remarks were when Rowdy raced at JGR. His situation has changed and now it’s not his team owner preventing him from competing at Indy but a fellow Cup competitor.

Will he ever get a chance to race the event? Time will tell.
